Estate blocks with real lawn on them

Taylors Lakes went up largely through the eighties and nineties, and the blocks show it. Compared with the older suburbs closer in, there's a lot more actual grass here — proper back lawns, open front yards, and long fence lines that tend to have a hedge running down them.

Bigger lawns are a different proposition to a courtyard. They take longer, they generate a lot more clippings, and they punish you if you skip a cut in October. Most of our Taylors Lakes customers are on a fortnightly schedule through spring and summer for exactly that reason, easing back as things slow down.

We're based in Delahey, which is the next suburb across, so we're through here constantly and can usually offer a consistent day of the week rather than whenever we happen to be nearby.

What we do in Taylors Lakes

Larger lawns on schedule

Fortnightly through the growing season so it never gets ahead of you, monthly or as-needed over winter.

Fence-line hedges

The long runs of photinia, pittosporum and murraya this area is full of, kept to line and cleaned up after.

Edging that holds

Driveways, paths and garden bed borders cut back sharply — the thing that makes a big lawn actually look finished.

Clippings taken away

A big lawn fills a green bin in one visit. We take the lot with us so it isn't your problem.

Getting the most out of a big lawn

Spring is when you lose control. From late September a warm-season lawn can put on serious growth in a fortnight. The households that struggle are the ones on a monthly cut through October and November — by the third week it's too long to cut cleanly in one pass.

Cut height beats watering. On a large open lawn, mowing height does more for summer survival than extra watering. Left a bit longer, the grass shades its own root zone and holds moisture far better than a close-cut lawn that has been watered twice as much.

Hedges: little and often. A long fence-line hedge is much less work trimmed twice a year than rescued once. Once it goes woody, bringing it back is a far bigger job than keeping it in shape ever was.

Clippings add up fast. One cut of a decent back lawn will fill a green bin on its own. If you'd rather not lose the bin space for a fortnight, we'll take them.
