Lawn Mowing in Sydenham

Long John's is based in Delahey, which shares postcode 3037 with Sydenham. We're not a city operator servicing the west from a distance — this is our own patch, and we're on these streets most days of the week anyway.

Practically, that means a few things. We can usually give you a fixed day rather than a vague window. If a job runs short we can often fit in a same-week cut. And a small front lawn is still worth our time, because getting to you costs us almost nothing.

Sydenham is mostly newer estate housing around the Watergardens end — tidy blocks, moderate lawns, and gardens designed to be low maintenance. The work is usually a straightforward, reliable fortnightly service rather than anything heroic, which suits us fine.

Thin topsoil is the usual culprit. Estate lawns are often laid over not much topsoil on top of compacted clay. When a lawn here struggles it's rarely a mowing problem — it's roots that can't get down. Aerating and top dressing does more than any amount of fertiliser.

Small lawns still want the right height. A courtyard lawn cut too short bakes just as badly as a big one, and with less root mass to fall back on. We keep it a touch longer through summer.

Nature strips are on you. Brimbank expects residents to mow the strip out front. It's part of our regular visit at no extra cost — we're already there with the mower running.

Wind is a real factor out here. The open estates cop the wind, which dries lawns out faster than people expect and pushes new hedges out of shape. Staking young plants and keeping the cut higher both help.
